City of Burlington
Burlington's history began with the Mississauga nation inhabiting the area before the British purchased the land through treaties between 1792 and 1818. Joseph Brant, a Mohawk chief, settled in the area around 1802 on land granted for his service in the American Revolutionary War, and Burlington still celebrates Joseph Brant Day.
Settlement increased after the War of 1812 due to fertile soil and good transportation via local ports. Burlington became a village in 1873 and a town in 1914, growing rapidly with the rise of rail transport and local industry.
The post-World War II era saw further expansion with cheap electricity from Niagara Falls and the construction of the Queen Elizabeth Way, driving industrial and residential growth. Burlington became a city in 1974, surpassing 100,000 residents, and by 2006 its population exceeded 160,000.
