Rexdale Neighbourhood

The history of Rexdale dates to the mid-1950s when developer Rex Wesley Heslop purchased farmland and established the first subdivision, naming the area after himself. Heslop foresaw a housing demand emerging from workers at the growing Toronto International Airport and with the completion of Highway 401.

He incorporated industrial development into the plan to assist Etobicoke Township in reducing its residential tax burden. This strategic vision proved effective, as the initial subdivision sold out swiftly and Rexdale developed into a key industrial zone in Toronto.
